Ouistreham and Sword Beach
145 km from our campsite in Normandy
1h40 from your Normandy campsite, Sword Beach is the only one of the five D-Day beaches where French commandos fought. After seizing the German batteries at Ouistreham, the Green Berets liberated the Riva Bella sector before continuing their advance towards Pegasus Bridge at Bénouville. A moving way to discover the history of the Second World War during your stay at Le Grand Large campsite ****.

If you’d like to find out more about the events that forever marked the history of Ouisteham, the campsite recommends a visit to the N°4 Commando Museum, dedicated to Commandant Philippe Kieffer and the 1st Battalion of Marine Fusiliers who took part in the operations on “Sword Beach”. Of the 177 men of the battalion who landed on June 6, only 24 finished the campaign unharmed. Also worth seeing: the Musée du Mur de l’Atlantique “le Grand Bunker” – the last visible vestige of what was the Channel’s most powerful coastal battery – which extends over 6 levels. Visitors can experience the atmosphere that reigned in this monumental blockhouse on the eve of D-Day.
